However, placing a smaller roman numeral in front of a larger roman numeral subtracts the smaller from the larger. For example IV is one minus five and therefore it's the roman numeral for the number four. This is only valid for one roman numeral before another roman numeral. For instance XXC is not the roman numeral for eighty.
