Just what are “food groups” anyway? Well, they are basically a way of categorizing and quantifying the foods we need in order to stay healthy. For instance, did you know that different countries have different food groups? You are probably familiar with the USDA’s My Pyramid program, but what about the Canadian Government's Canada's Food Guide, the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency's "Balance of Good Health" guide, or the Portuguese food wheel?

There are five food groups in the "food pyramid": the Grain Group, the Vegetable Group, the Fruit Group, and the Meat Group. The food groups were arranged in the "the Improved Food Guide Pyramid" which was a nutritional guie created by Tufts University School of Medicine. It was replaced in April 2005 by the new USDA nutrition advisory program title "MyPyramid."
