Most Americans are very familiar with the food pyramid in the United States, which is designed to show which types of food we should eat more of, and which we should eat less of. A rainbow of colored, vertical stripes represents the five food groups plus fats and oils. Here's what the colors stand for:

• orange — grains
• green — vegetables
• red — fruits
• yellow — fats and oils
• blue — milk and dairy products
• purple — meat, beans, fish, and nuts

The idea is that you should eat different “colors” of food every day, and less of some than others. For example, less meat, beans, fish, and nuts, but plenty of vegetables and grains. So you will find vegetables and grains at the bottom of the pyramid, forming the largest portions with the thickest bands of color, while at the top of the pyramid are things like meat and fats and oils, to encourage you to remember to limit your intake of these less healthy food sources. Now play the Food Groups Picture Quiz to test your knowledge of the food pyramid!
